ACAL Regular Season Match vs. Olds College - October 8 2010 - Current ACAL Record 2-0
The STMU women's volleyball team played an important match this past Friday against ACAL rival Olds College.  The ladies came into this game knowing that this would be an important benchmark to see how far the team has come and where it needs to be in order to compete for the championship.
The Olds team had done a lot of recruiting over the past year, ensuring this would be a hard match against an good team.  The team again struggled with serving at the beginning missing 5 serves and having to come from behind in the 1st set.  The team came really close to reversing the sluggish start, but eventually lost the 1st set 24-26.
The team capitalized on momentum from the 1st set and played with much more confidence moving into the 2nd set.  With excellent hitting and blocking that they were able to win the next three sets and the match, sending a clear message that the road to the ACAL title this year must go through St. Mary’s!
The match sets went: 24-26, 25-23, 25-18 and 26-24.  Special recognition goes to Candice Duckett who had a breakout game, ranking in the top 3 in serving, passing, blocking and digging on the team.
Both volleyball teams are back in action in this Friday in Three Hills, where they will take on Prairie Bible Institute in week 3 of ACAL play.

Men’s Volleyball: Head Coach - Jeff Varga (stmu.mvb@gmail.com)

ACAL Regular Season Match vs. Olds College - October 8 2010 - Current ACAL Record 0-2
Congratulations to the Mens' Volleyball team for the great effort in the match against Olds friday night at Rally Pointe. With only 7 players, they managed to get into the heads of the Olds players and put up a great effort. After watching the Women's team win a great match, the Men took the court with a great deal of intensity and energy.
By surpassing their goals for the night, they managed a valiant but losing effort.  By achieving their highest point totals of the year, the team has shown that it will not be a pushover in ACAL play.  The three sets went: 25-13, 25-14, 25-15.
The team has improved exponentially as the season progresses and they are looking forward to even more improvements as they get ready to face their next opponent this Friday, when they play Prairie Bible Institute. A great thanks also goes out to the Basketball & Volleyball teams for staying to cheer the team on.
Both volleyball teams are back in action in this Friday in Three Hills, where they will take on Prairie Bible Institute in week 3 of ACAL play.

Women’s Basketball: Head Coach - Randy Peron (stmu.wbb@gmail.com)

ACAC Preseason Tournament at MRU: Games vs. Medicine Hat College / Lethbridge College/ SAIT
Women’s basketball continued their preseason preparation by playing in their 2nd exhibition ACAC Tournament this past weekend.  The team set out to improve on their previous performances while focusing on some specific aspects of their overall game with 3 matches vs. strong ACAC Teams.
Struggling in the first game vs. Medicine Hat College, the team tried to compete against an athletic, well-coached opponent. After a difficult first three quarters, the ladies seemed to find their rhythm towards the end of the 4th quarter, and finished strong with improved play and better execution. Player of the game went to Lindsay MacWilliam for the Lightning.
Wanting to carry that over into their second match of the weekend, the women prepared to go up against against Lethbridge College.  Playing their best team game of the season the team competed hard throughout the contest and with intense team play on both ends of the court battled the Kodiaks for the entire match. Finishing the game with both better defense and more fluid execution of the offense, the women proved to themselves that they can play hard and compete with ACAC teams. Player of the game went to Kaitlin Harding, who showed leadership skills and poise on the court throughout the contest.
Their final game was a re-match vs. the SAIT Trojans. The women even competed as hard as they could despite having a short bench due to injuries. The players stuck together throughout the contest playing with only 6 players in the 2nd half. Player of the game went to Jorja Flagel who played very well against some very strong players from SAIT.
Results for the weekend:
103-32 vs. Medicine Hat / 86-39 vs. Lethbridge / 105-19 vs. SAIT
Preseason work continues this week with a scrimmage against Lethbridge College here in Calgary.  The game goes Friday evening at 6pm at Rundle Academy.

Men’s Basketball: Head Coach - David Petroziello (stmu.mbb@gmail.com)

The men’s basketball team enjoyed a rare weekend off, spending the free time visiting with friends and family for Thanksgiving.  The team also went out to support the volleyball teams on Friday at Rally Pointe and brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the games.
The team was back at training Tuesday morning with a 7am conditioning session to work off the turkey and pie from the weekend.  They get back to the practice floor Tuesday night in preparation for their upcoming tournament in Lethbridge.
Preseason continues October 15-16 for men’s basketball in the Lethbridge College tournament, where they will face three strong ACAC programs in Lethbridge College, Concordia University College, and Medicine Hat College.

Lightning Athletes of the Week
October 12 2010
Female Athlete of the Week: Laura Waters
The Female Athlete of the Week goes to Laura Waters of Women’s Volleyball.  Laura is the captain of the varsity volleyball team, and showed why last Friday vs. Olds.  Laura has played amazing the last 2 weeks and ranked top of the team for kills and defense vs. Olds.  Despite battling a bad cold and coughing a lot during timeouts, Laura was encouraging her teammates and displayed great leadership and perseverance. Off the court Laura has also been inspirational to the younger athletes and has encouraged them to play hard by her advice and her hard work on the court.
Congratulations Laura!
Male Athlete of the Week: Chris Sheran
The Male Athlete of the Week goes to Chris Sheran of Men’s Volleyball.  Leading the team to its best performance of the year, Chris put his athleticism on display by diving all over the court and playing with hunger and desire.  He led the team in blocks at the net and led the team to never quitting against a very good Olds team.
Congratulations Chris!

October 5 2010 Athletics Update

Department of Athletics and Recreation
Athletics Update: October 5 2010
The 2010-2011 athletics season at St. Mary’s kicked off over the weekend with all four teams in action.

Women’s Volleyball: Head Coach - Barry Yee (stmu.wvb@gmail.com)
ACAL Regular Season Match vs. Ambrose University College - October 1 2010
The STMU women's volleyball team played their season opener in a highly energized evening at their home court at Rally Pointe.  The girls had the jitters at the beginning at game and missed 9 serves resulting in a 17-25 loss.  However, despite the large number of fans that Ambrose brought in to cheer their team on, our girls came back with a much better focus and played their own game resulting in a 25-22, 27-25 and 25-17 wins.  Great job on the win to start the season off!
The next night the team traveled to Lacombe for a mini-tournament vs. Canadian University College and a school from Texas, Southwestern Adventist University. The night began with a tilt against ACAL rival CUC, and the girls played well, winning both sets against.  In the match against the SWAU Knights from Texas the team came out eager to play and defeated them 25-16, 25-22 and 19-21 with the complete bench participating in all the matches.  Great match by the girls.  Special recognition goes to Kendra McLeod who played hard even though she had a bleeding ankle.
The grit and determination of the team is a model of a true team with spirit and dedication.  Great start to the season and 3-0 record so far in matches played.

Men’s Volleyball: Head Coach - Jeff Varga (stmu.mvb@gmail.com)
ACAL Regular Season Match vs. Ambrose University College - October 1 2010
Lightning Athletics is excited to re-introduce the men’s volleyball program for the 2010 ACAL season.  Coming back after a few years with no team, the program is beginning the rebuilding process this year, and the squad is excited to get the year going.
The first match of the year had the men face-off against perennial ACAL power Ambrose.  The team played hard and got better as the match wore on, but still came up short, losing all three sets 25-3, 25-7, 25-7.
The team was back at practice on Sunday and got in extra training by working out with the women’s team for extra preparation.  They look to continue improving throughout the season and will continue to work hard to represent St. Mary’s.
Both volleyball teams are back in action this Friday at Rally Pointe with another ACAL clash vs. rival Olds College. Women’s game goes at 6:30pm, followed by the men’s game at 8:30.

Women’s Basketball: Head Coach - Randy Peron (stmu.wbb@gmail.com)
ACAC Preseason Tournament at SAIT: Games vs. Mount Royal University / Red Deer College / SAIT
The women’s basketball team began their preseason with a tournament at SAIT vs. ACAC teams.  The team worked hard despite these games being their first competitive scrimmages of the year.  The rust was apparent as they dropped all three games:
94-19 vs Mount Royal / 78-38 vs Red Deer / 118-26 vs SAIT.
This was a great learning opportunity for the team as they got a taste of what competition lays ahead in the ACAC.  They are back at practice this week in preparation for this weekend’s tournament at Mount Royal, where they will face more ACAC competition in Medicine Hat College, Lethbridge College, and a rematch with SAIT.

Men’s Basketball: Head Coach - David Petroziello (stmu.mbb@gmail.com)
ACAC Preseason Tournament at King’s College, Edmonton: Games vs. Augustana / Olds College / Grande Prairie Regional College
The men’s basketball team also began their preseason in a tournament in Edmonton.  The group improved steadily over the weekend, with strides being made in each successive game.  The team kept a full schedule over the trip, including a study hall session on Friday morning, and a video session later that night.
Despite a poor showing vs. Augustana to begin the tournament, the team still came away with a 2-1 record from the weekend, showing flashes of what may lie ahead for this team and program by beating a vastly improved and very athletic ACAC team in Grande Prairie by 1 in overtime.  Massena Fedoruk nailed a crucial shot at the buzzer to force overtime, and Tyson Denhamer hit a three-pointer with 6.6 seconds left in overtime to give St. Mary’s the lead.  After a heart-stopping final defensive stand, the Lightning walked off the court with a courageous team win.
Results for the weekend:
83-47 vs Augustana / 69-47 vs Olds 2 / 68-67 vs Grande Prairie.
The men’s team returns to the practice floor this week as they look ahead to another ACAC tournament in Lethbridge on October 15-16.

Another Story on New Lightning Hoops Coach

The news of St. Mary's recent appointment of internationally experienced coach and current StMU Athletics Director David Petroziello as Head Coach for Men's Basketball continues to make news outside Alberta.

Follow this link for a story on Coach Petroziello on the Qhoops.net website out of Montreal.

Qhoops Story - "New Challenge for Quebec Coach"

Here is the story:

QUEBEC COACH RETURNS TO HIS FIRST LOVE

It was only a mater of time before coach Dave got back on the bench.

David Petroziello, the Quebecer whose global travels give him the most unique coaching resume in Canadian
basketball, has been named Head Coach of the St. Mary's College men's basketball team in Calgary.

Coach Petroziello was already
the athletic director at St. Mary's, and has now taken on the extra duties as the men's
basketball program prepares to join the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).
"St. Mary’s took a strong step to solidify its men’s basketball program today by appointing Director of Athletics
David Petroziello as Head Coach," the athletic department said in a statement.
"The appointment of an experienced and well-qualified coach demonstrates St. Mary’s commitment to making the
transition to the ACAC in 2012 a smooth and successful one."

Coach Petroziello
takes over a program which has been consistently successful in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League (ACAL).
The league consists of small Alberta colleges that operate outside the national governing body, the CCAA.
Coach Petroziello will have a tough challenge of getting his team to compete in the higher-calibre ACAC league, but Petroziello is no stranger to challenges.

He made CEGEP de Sherbrooke a competitive squad in the AAA league, and he also led the Vancouver Titans of the IBL in a city that has had a love-hate relationship with basketball.

Coach Petroziello has also spent time overseas, including a stint in India working with that country's
national team program. He also spent a year coaching in Australia.

St. Mary's Making News at Home and Outside Alberta

The news of the recent appointment of St. Mary's Athletic Director David Petroziello as the Men's Basketball Coach is spreading far and wide.

Petroziello, who brings a wide range of national and international experience to the Lightning program, recently became head coach for men's basketball, and is currently at work in rebuilding the program to get it ready for ACAC entry in 2012.

Follow these links to see the news on the ACAC website: ACAC News Link

Women's Basketball Meets New AD Petroziello

The St. Mary's University College women's basketball team was the first individual team to meet with new Athletic Director David Petroziello in advance of the 2010-2011 school year.  With classes beginning September 7th, Petroziello took the opportunity to meet with the team and elaborate on his vision for athletics at St. Mary's.

"I was very impressed by the quality of the young women who are part of Coach Peron's program" said Petroziello. "They are all bright, extremely switched-on people who are dedicated to their educations and to their sport. St. Mary's is fortunate to have such excellent ambassadors, and I am excited to see them develop over this season and beyond."

Topics discussed included the future of the athletic program at St. Mary's, details on the ACAC transition, and an explanation of the new realities of what it means to be varsity athlete at St. Mary's.

Some new initiatives include an academic oversight program which will ensure that all varsity athletes are working progressively towards the obtention of their degrees. This program will be composed of tutoring, advising, study hall requirements, and class attendance rules.

Another exciting new initiative for Lightning Athletics is the introduction of a community service component to the responsibilities of a varsity athlete. Each athlete will be expected to complete a quota of community service hours each semester in order to qualify to play on a team. Volunteering with community groups, mentoring young people, or developing a grassroots NGO will all count towards fulfilling this requirement.

Needless to say there are exciting changes happening at Lightning Athletics, and the entire department from the athletes to the coaches and staff, are dedicated to doing what is necessary for our program to grow into an indispensable part of the university community.

The women's basketball program is an integral piece of this puzzle, stay tuned for more and come out and support these remarkable young women!!

St. Mary's Appoints AD David Petroziello as Men's Basketball Coach

Exciting changes continue at St. Mary’s University College in anticipation of the school’s transition to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.  St. Mary’s took a strong step to solidify its men’s basketball program by appointing Director of Athletics David Petroziello as Head Coach. This appointment of an experienced and well-qualified coach is another example of St. Mary’s commitment to making the transition to ACAC a smooth and successful one.
Petroziello takes over a program which has been consistently successful in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League, but which has struggled to establish itself as a legitimate option at the next level in the run-up to the 2012 ACAC entry date.
Petroziello’s experience is extensive and wide-ranging, and includes stops at different colleges in Quebec as well as in the professional ranks in Canada and overseas. Most recently spending a year coaching in Australia, previous postings also include General Manager and Head Coach of the Vancouver Titans professional basketball team (IBL) as well as Assistant Coach at Simon Fraser University (CIS). Petroziello also spent time in India working the national team program, where he led a 4 week training camp for athletes and coaches.
With the fall semester just around the corner, Coach Petroziello is already at work on recruiting and strengthening his roster of players for the upcoming season. All individuals interested in St. Mary’s Lightning basketball are encouraged to contact him directly for more information.

He can be reached at 403-254-3728 / david.petroziello(at)stmu.ab.ca
